Google Photos: Desktop Feature Makes It Worth A Try

The debut of Google Photos app has a lot of people excited (and rightfully so), but what a lot of people don’t know is that this app is not just for your phone – it can be used on your desktop too!

While Google Photos was designed for phones. it can be successfully downloaded and used on your PC, making it a truly unique app worth using.

To use it on your computer, go to the Desktop Uploader page, pick the download for Mac or Windows, then log-in using your existing Google credentials.

From there you can pick what folders you want the app to monitor and back-up; once you do Photos will run in the background while you go about your business.

Photos is a free app that  scours your device or computer for photos and videos, from the newest to the forgotten and uploads them to a private album in the Cloud.

It can store an unlimited number of files of up to 16 megapixels or 1080p video and the service is free.

For those interested in storing higher quality photos, you have the option of using Google Drive storage, which charges a monthly fee after 15 gigabytes ($1.99 a month for 100 GB and $9.99 a month for 1 terabyte).

The real beauty of Photos though, comes from all the extras.

Photos is packed with cool features, like facial recognition, geotagging and a People, Places, Things filter that makes it easy to locate photos without you tagging pics- yes, Photos tags and groups for you!

Even cooler is the “Assistant” feature: the Assistant constantly monitoring you new and old pics and videos and puts them into collages or GIF’s; it will then send you a notification, asking if you want to keep the collage or delete it from your library.

Photos even has the ability to create short videos (with a soundtrack) from bundles of video clips and photos it believes are related and it does this without any prompting from you.

On the down side, many are concerned with how secure the app is.

Google said in a statement that your information is private and it will not share any personal info, but an app is only as good as it’s weakest link: that means if you are sharing across multiple platforms the entire app is as vulnerable as the weakest security in the group.

Photos launched last week so it is still early, but most reviews have been positive and many agree that the ability to use it on your PC makes it worth looking into.
