Grand Theft Auto V Top Video Game As We Head Into Christmas 2013

Everybody in the video game industry is talking about Grand Theft Auto V. That is due to the sales that are generated and the fact that the game drives hardware sales.

NPD Group recently released the top selling video games in USA for September and GTA V is number 1 on the list.

A total of 1.079 billion dollars in sales was generated. This includes video games, accessories, software and hardware. While video game hardware sales are going down when compared to the same month of 2012, the video games sell better, amount to over $700 million.

The top 10 selling video games in USA are:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V
  2. Madden NFL 25
  3. NBA 2K14
  4. Diablo III
  5. FIFA 14
  6. Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5 Remix
  7. Disney Infinity
  8. NHL 14
  9. Minecraft – the Xbox 360 version
  10. Saints Row IV

The official statement by Liam Callahan of NPD Group stated:

These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories, which account for roughly 50 percent of the total consumer spend on games…

The launch of Grand Theft Auto V this September was a much needed shot in the arm for the industry. Overall retail sales across hardware, software and accessories were up 27% versus September 2012, lifted by software sales of Grand Theft Auto V.

While it was expected that GTA V would sell really well, what nobody expected was the fact that PlayStation 4 consoles sold better than XBox 360 in September. This marks the first month since December 2010 when that happened. However, analysts argue that this appeared because of the Grand Theft Auto V PS3 System Super Slim Bundle – 500 GB.

The Nintendo Wii U also gained an increase of 100% in sales thanks to the Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD bundle.
