Grey’s Anatomy Season Finale Recap: Christina Says Goodbye

Sandra Oh played her final scenes as the incomparable Dr. Christina Yang tonight during the season finale of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.

It was the moment fans everywhere had been dreading and even though it was heartbreaking I must commend the shows creator, Shonda Rhimes, for giving the character and fans a perfect ending.

It wasn’t perfect in the sense of it being happily-ever-after; it was perfect because it was true to the character and her history on the show.

Christina finally took the job offer from Burke (Isaiah Washington) and left for Zurich to run his hospital, leaving Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Owen (Kevin McKidd) and fans in tears.

Fans were treated to moving scenes between Christina and her “person”, Meredith, who convinced her leaving was the right thing to do.

Their sisterhood has been one of the cornerstones of the show and Rhimes honored it by having them do one last dance party in the on-call room, set to “Where Do the Good Go” a song that was played constantly in season 1.

It was sad that Christina and Owen would not be together, but this too was true to the character: since day 1 Christina has always been a doctor first, to the detriment of her personal life.  There goodbye was sweet, one of the best moments of the night.

In a surprise move Shane (Gaius Charles) left with Christina to work for her.

Another great moment was when Christina gave Alex (Justin Chambers) her seat on the board, which Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) had promised to Bailey (Chandra Wilson).  This should make the hospital dynamic very interesting come next season.

As for the rest of the episode: Meredith and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) had a huge fight over their careers when she decided they shouldn’t move to Washington.  April (Sarah Drew) was shaken up by the terrorist attack on the hospital and questioned if her and Jackson ( Jesse Williams) should have the baby.  Jackson’s mom convinced her it would be alright.

However it was all about Christina.  Sandra Oh turned in a brilliant performance, as always.  She will truly be missed as will Dr. Yang: the halls of Seattle Grace won’t be the same.

You can catch the first 10 seasons of ‘Grey’s Aantomy’ on HuluPlus and Amazon.
