Harley Davidson is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles, approximately 251,000 of them located in the US, due to a problem with the rear brakes.
According to Harley Davidson, the problem first came to light in June, 2010, when they received a report of a Trike model that lost use of its rear brakes. A crash that occurred the following month is under investigation, but the company says it has not yet determined if that crash was caused by the same issue.
The bikes being recalled are specific Touring, CVO Touring, and Trike motorcycles from the model years 2009 through 2012. A complete list of affected models is posted below.
Harley Davidson said in a statement that the rear brake light switch “may be exposed to excessive heat from the exhaust system.” This can cause the brake light to malfunction and either not light up when it should, or light up when it shouldn’t. The problem may also cause brake fluid to leak at the brake light switch, “affecting rear brake performance,” which may increase the chances of a crash.
Harley Davidson is notifying owners of models affected by the recall, and said that dealerships will install a new brake light switch kit on the recalled motorcycles at no charge. They expect the safety recall to begin on October 31, 2011, and the company said that owners can call them at 1-414-343-4056 if they have questions about the recall.
