In Mac OS X, it’s easy to take a screenshot and save it as an image file. When it comes to taking a screenshot on your Mac, you have a few options:
Capture the entire screen
To capture an image of your entire screen, press Command (⌘)+Shift+3. The image will be saved to your desktop.
Capture a part of your screen
To capture an image of just a part of your screen, press Command (⌘)+Shift+4. Then click and drag your cursor over the desired section. Let go and the image will be saved to your desktop.
Capture a specific window
To capture the contents of a single application window, press Command (⌘)+Shift+4. Then press the space bar. Roll your new ‘camera’ cursor over the desired application window and then click. The image will be saved to your desktop. This command can also be used to capture the contents of specific application menus.

Useful information
- Pressing the Escape (esc) at any point during a screen capture command will cancel the command.
- To copy an intended screenshot to the Clipboard instead of saving it to the desktop, use Command+Shift+Control+4.
- Applications containing private or copyrighted information, such as DVD Player, may not permit the screen capture feature.
