IRS: “Where’s My Refund” Not Working

The “Where’s My Refund” section on the website of the the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is broken.

Taxpayers which have filed their taxes with the IRS electronically can normally go to “Where’s My Refund” 72 hours after filing to look up the status of their return. If the taxpayer filed by mail, the information is available after approximately 4 weeks.

But right now, according to the IRS, some taxpayers are logging into the site and being told that the IRS has no information about their return. On the site, the IRS has posted:

We are aware that some taxpayers who have filed electronically and received an acknowledgement from the IRS are concerned when they visit “Where’s My Refund” and are told that we have no information regarding their return. This is a temporary situation, and we expect to resolve the matter in a few days. At that time, taxpayers will be able to get an expected refund date when they visit “Where’s My Refund.”

They also state that, even though the “Where’s My Refund” program says there is no information for their return, refunds are actually being processed within the normal timeframe. In the past, that has averaged 10 to 21 days.
