Amazon just dropped the price of the Kindle 3G, by offering a version with ‘Special Offers’. This comes just a day after Barnes & Noble released it’s new Nook (see story).
Six weeks ago Amazon began offering it’s standard, wifi only, version of the Kindle at a lower cost but with ads, or ‘Special Offers’ on it. Purchasing the version with ads brought the price down from $139 to $114. A difference of $25. That Kindle quickly became it’s best selling Kindle version.
The Kindle 3G with Special Offers cuts the same amount off the price, $25. The price goes from $189 for the Kindle 3G no-ad version to $164 with the ads. This makes the Kindle 3G with Special Offers the lowest cost 3G eReader in the US.
According to Amazon, the benefits of the 3G version is both in speed and accessibility. Books can be downloaded from most locations with 3G coverage, around the globe, and books can be download in as little as 60 seconds. There is no monthly fee or contract required for 3G access.
