Kindle Fire, HD, Paperwhite, 7″, 8.9″ – Which One Makes The Best Gift?

Kindles flew off the shelves on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Cyber Monday 2012 was the the best-selling day for the Kindle family worldwide to date, said Amazon in a statement the next day.

Along with sales, the number of Kindle models available is growing. Last year at Christmas time, there were five Kindles to choose from. This year there are eight!

Here’s a look at the choices:

The basic Kindle is, according to Amazon, “the perfect entry-level Kindle for any reader.” This model costs $69. It’s small, light, and the least expensive of the bunch. Primary use: ereader.

The Kindle Keyboard 3g is is a slightly heftier version of the basic Kindle, with more storage and a keypad. It costs $139. Primary use: ereader.

The Kindle Paperwhite is a step up from the original Kindle. It comes in two models – the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Paperwhite 3G.

    1. Amazon states that the

Kindle Paperwhite

    1. is “the world’s most advanced e-reader.” It is priced at $119. Features include a built-in light, battery life of 8 weeks (measured at a rather skimpy 30 minutes of reading a day), and built in Wi-Fi. Primary use: ereader

    1. The

Kindle Paperwhite 3G

includes all of the perks of the Paperwhite, and comes with free 3G wireless access – no contract or additional fees required. The 3G wireless access allows shoppers to quickly download e-books anywhere with a 3G wireless signal. The price of the Kindle Paperwhite 3G is $179. Primary use: ereader

The Kindle Fire breaks away from the ereader platform. It functions as a tablet, and is priced at $159. The Kindle Fire features a color display, and shoppers can download apps, watch movies /TV shows, and surf the internet. It also includes unlimited cloud storage and a special feature called Kindle FreeTime. Kindle FreeTime is specifically geared toward kids. It allows parents to set daily use limits and also to control the content viewed by children. Primary use: tablet.

Kindle Fire HD  takes the Kindle Fire to the next level. It is the most popular model since it was launched in September of this year.  There are 3 different versions of the Kindle Fire HD that shoppers have to choose from.

    1. The

7″ Kindle Fire HD

    1.  comes with a price tag of $199. Amazon states that this model is “the world’s most-advanced 7″ tablet” with features such as Dolby audio, 16 GB of memory storage, and a powerful processor.

    1. The

8.9″ Kindle Fire HD

    1. comes with the same features as the 7″ model, with the addition of a larger screen, a beefed up HD display, a faster processor, and a faster graphics engine. The price for this model is $299.

    1. Also available is the

Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ 4G

. This model has the same features as the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, with the addition of 4G LTE wireless service. 4G service is available through AT&T in a 1 year data package. The price of this model is $499.

With Kindle sales breaking records, there will likely be plenty of them under Christmas trees this holiday season.
