Adam Baker’s landlord confirmed to the crowd gathered around that he had in fact evicted the father from the home.
On Tuesday afternoon a crowd surrounded the home that was last known to be occupied by missing 10 year old Zahra Baker as father, Adam Baker, arrived to retrieve his belongings. Baker returned to the home amidst shouts from strangers alleging that he had something to do with the disappearance and suspected death of his daughter. He had his mother, brother and attorney at his side. The group went into the backyard and took photos before venturing into the home.
Outside the landlord arrived and told the crowd that he had evicted Baker from the home and he was there to retrieve his personal belongings. Capt. Thurma Whisnant of the Hickory Police Department confirmed that the home was no longer considered a part of the search and that Baker’s attorney had requested permission to remove belongings.
The landlord did not give a reason for the eviction but did state that the search conducted by police had made his home inhabitable. He did remind the crowd that they should not rush to judgment on Baker as he was innocent until proven guilty.
Adam Baker was arrested late last month on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Zahra. He was held in jail for a few days before posting bond and being released.
Adam’s wife Elisa, Zahra’s stepmother, is still in jail on charges including felony obstruction of justice for writing a fake ransom note that was found at the scene. Letters that were allegedly written by Elisa Baker to crime memorabilia dealer Eric Gein have surfaced and point to the father doing something ‘horrifying’ to Zahra after she was dead.
The letters specifically state that the couple did not kill the girl but that what Adam did to her later was horrifying. It also says that the girl is not missing as police know where she is and what happened. Deputy Chief Clyde Deal has said that the note resembled her handwriting and content was similar to some she had said to police, but he couldn’t guarantee it was Elisa’s letter.
In the meantime, authorities are draining a pond on Christie Road as they continue to search for missing Zahra. The pond is located near the area where the prosthetic leg was found last week. This area is in close proximity to a home where Elisa Baker once lived.
