Missing NC Girl’s Stepmother In Court

Missing N.C. girl Zahra Baker.

Elisa Baker, stepmother to missing Zahra Baker,  faced another day in court on Friday stemming from charges unrelated to the disappearance of the 10 year old girl.

Baker was scheduled to appear in a Catawba County court Friday on charges of writing worthless checks. She has been held in jail since her arrest on the charges October 10.

Elisa began cooperating with police in the investigation this week and went with investigators to three different sites on Monday.

While the stepmother faces her charges, investigators have wrapped up searching the yard at the home where Zahra lived with her father and stepmother.  They expect to continue searching inside the home through the weekend on a sealed search warrant.

Meanwhile they have also returned to the site on Christie Road where they located a prosthetic leg believed to belong to Zahra. She had lost her leg at age 5 to bone cancer.  Authorities would not disclose what led them back to this site or what they were hoping to find.

This week investigators have uncovered two key pieces of evidence in the case. On Tuesday they located a mattress that is believed to belong to Zahra. It was allegedly thrown out just days prior to the report she was missing. The mattress is currently being tested for DNA evidence.

Also on Tuesday they located a prosthetic leg at a property with ties to stepmother Elisa Baker. It is unknown whether the stepmother led them to the leg.

Zahra was reported missing on October 9, but no one other than family has reported seeing the girl since September 25. On October 12, police canceled the Amber alert and turned the search into a homicide investigation.
