Netflix just announced that Mercy star Taylor Schilling has been cast as the lead for their original drama/comedy series “Orange Is The New Black.”
“Orange Is The New Black” is based on the memoir “Orange Is The New Black: My Year In a Women’s Prison” by Piper Kerman. Netflix describes the hour long show as a “drama, with comedic elements.”
Taylor Schilling will play the role of Piper, a woman whose relationship with a drug runner results in her arrest and dentition in a federal prison. In a release, Netflix says “Lacking any real-world experience to deal with this harsh new environment, Piper immerses herself in women’s prison culture and finds acceptance, tears, laughter, and love amidst an outspoken group of inmates.”
Schilling, a Boston native, is best known for her roles in the NBC medical drama “Mercy,” where she plays Veronica Agnes Flanagan Callahan. The actress also had roles in last year’s movie “Atlas Shrugged” and this years “The Lucky One.”
It’s been previously reported that “Orange Is The New Black” is contracted for 13 episodes. No word yet on when it will premier.
