New HP Tablet By End Of 2012?

Hewlett-Packard (HP) will launch a new tablet by the end of this year, according to HP’s CEO Meg Whitman.

Whitman said the new tablet will feature Intel technology and will run Windows 8.

Speaking at a Wall Street Journal conference in Menlo Park, California, Whitman admitted to owning an iPad. “The iPad is terrific; I have one,” she said. However she also said she uses it for entertainment, not to get work done. Whitman indicated that the new HP tablet will be designed for enterprise users. It will include security features designed for businesses, and be geared toward productivity and business network compatibility.

“There is a big trend to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to work; which is all well and good until there is a security breach. We are going to provide an alternative,” she said.

Meg Whitman was brought in as the new HP CEO after the failed launch of HP’s last tablet, the HP TouchPad. The TouchPad was launched late last summer and priced at $500 and $600, depending on storage options. Sales were poor. After just six weeks, HP gave up on the tablet and sold it at liquidation prices, $99 and $149.

No other specs for the new tablet were disclosed. It will be interesting to see if HP uses any of the HP TouchPad’s design in their new tablet. According to Medgadget.com, medical personnel are finding the TouchPad, with its primarily plastic body, to be useful as it can be used in rooms with an MRI machine.
