Netflix viewers can start preparing for the arrival of new a group Marvel superheroes.
In a deal announced Thursday, The Walt Disney Co. and Netflix, Inc. are set to develop more than one new TV series based on several lesser-known Marvel comic book characters.
The characters include “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist,” and “Luke Cage.”
The new deal gives each of these characters an opportunity (and an audience) to share their own stories, something that otherwise may not have happened on the big (or small) screen.
If the series proves wildly successful at establishing a loyal audience and fan-base, plans can be made to eventually develop the character on the big screen.
The unprecedented deal also greatly benefits both companies.
Netflix can use the collaboration with Disney to profit from a genre that has generated billions of dollars at the box-office.
The deal also excludes Disney from being held solely accountable for taking on the work and risk in developing a series alone.
The first of the new series is expected to appear on Netflix in 2015.
