Newegg launched a special deal this weekend. The online retailer is offering a free tablet with the purchase of a 15.6″ ASUS VivoBook S500CA-US71T.
The ultrabook includes a 500 GB hard drive, 24 GB SSD, 4 GB of RAM, and is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor.
According to ASUS, it has a battery life of 5 hours. The device has a 15.6″ touchscreen and features Windows 8 (64 bit).
It’s priced at $699 through 9/29/2013.
The free tablet that comes with the ultrabook is a 7″ ASUS MeMO Pad. The MeMo Pad has a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB storage (can be upped to 32 GB with a Micro SD), and a 1mp camera. The tablet runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean).
The tablet sells on Newegg by itself for $119 and has a rating there of 3 out of a possible 5 “eggs”‘.
It’s a budget tablet, somewhat underpowered by today’s standards, but not bad overall.
Is the ultrabook with a free tablet for $699 a good deal?
Well, that depends on a couple of things….
The ASUS VivoBook S500CA-US71T is available to students for $539 from the Microsoft store. That’s $160 less than Newegg is charging, and the lowest price we found online.
For the student discount, Microsoft requires verification of student status and limits students to using their student discount only once, on one item, per year.
With the discount, students can save $160 and use that savings to buy a better tablet if they wanted.
For those of us that don’t qualify for the student discount, Amazon does have the same ultrabook available for $597.
That’s $102 less that at Newegg… but without the free tablet.
What do you think of Newegg’s sale? Gonna grab it or hold off for now?
