Nissan North America announced Thursday that they will be recalling a total of 604,500 vehicles, most of which are located in the U.S., due to problems with steering columns and battery cables.
303,000 Frontiers and 283,000 Xterra SUVs will be recalled to replace the lower steering column joint and shaft. The company will also recall 18,500 Sentra sedans to replace a positive battery cable terminal. 515,000 of the recalled vehicles are located in the U.S. The remaining are in Canada and several Latin American and African countries.
The lower steering column joint in the SUVs can develop a corrosion that could limit movement. In extreme cases this could cause the steering shaft to crack.
There is a battery cable problem in the Sentra that will lead to difficulty starting the vehicle and the possibility of stalling at low speeds.
The recall affects SUVs made between 2002 and 2004 and Sentras made between May 15, 2010 and July 8, 2010.
