No Big Bash For Donna Summer Funeral

Eschewing a big Whitney Houston style funeral, Donna Summer’s family plans to have a small, private, service.

“On behalf of the Sudano Family, the overwhelming outreach from the media, fans and friends alike has been most truly appreciated,” wrote Summer’s publicist, Brian Edwards, in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. “Reports of a public memorial next week in Nashville are not accurate,” he stated, “The services being planned will be private to include only family and close friends. Thank you for continuing to respect the family’s privacy during this time.”

The report of a funeral in Nashville was not the only inaccurate news reported shortly after her death. It was also initially reported that Summer had died in Key West, when she actually died at her home on Manasota Key, a barrier island just off the coast of the small town of Englewood, near Naples, Florida, on Thursday morning.

Summer had been diagnosed with lung cancer, and her illness was not known to the public.

There have been reports indicating that Summer’s lung cancer was caused by smoking. According to her family, those reports are inaccurate as well.

“On behalf of the Sudano family, various reports currently surfacing about the cause of Ms. Summer’s death are not accurate. Although she lost her battle to lung cancer at the age of 63, it was not related to smoking. Ms. Summer was a non-smoker,” said Edwards.

Donna Summer is survived by her husband, Bruce Sudano, and three daughters, Brooklyn, Mimi and Amanda.
