If things go well, in the near future you may be able to walk into a brick-and-mortar store with empty pockets or an empty wallet, and pay for your purchase using PayPal.
A pilot program is being run at five Home Depot stores which reportedly allows shoppers to enter their phone number and a personal identification number (PIN) to access their PayPal account and pull funds from it to buy products in-store.
While PayPal has standard debit and credit cards available to its users, this program will be the first time that PayPal has ventured into actual in-store transactions. Home Depot and PayPal declined to identify which Home Depot stores the test program will be run in, however they did say that a small number of employees from PayPal are already testing the system. The company is also reported to be working on a system for making PayPal payments via a smartphone app.
PayPal, which is now owned by eBay, has come a long way since the time when they used to pay people five dollars to sign up, and five dollars for referring others. The company now has over 100 million active accounts, operates in 190 markets, and handles funds in 24 different currencies.
