No More Nokia: Microsoft Scraps Once-Revered Brand

Microsoft has announced it is killing off the Nokia brand – as well as its own Microsoft Phone brand – and is switching to Microsoft Lumia instead.

Nokia devices have seen a sharp decline in use, with both consumers and developers dropping support for the former titan of the mobile phone industry.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services division sparked hopes for a revival; offering the Lumia line to compete in an already crowded smartphone market.

Alas, the magic that Nokia once wielded did not materialize even with Microsoft’s full support.

After months of articles hinting at the change and Nokia pages redirecting visitors to Microsoft.com, the company has decided to finally pull the Nokia brand.

Nokia France will be the first to be rebranded into Microsoft Lumia, with other countries to follow suit.

Nokia as an entity, however, will still be around.

Only its Devices and Services division was sold to Microsoft and has focused instead on mapping, networking and licensing services – most notably its HERE mapping app for Android devices.

Sad to see Nokia phones go? Feel it was about time the brand was laid to rest?
