The New York Times reported this week that the NY Giants’ Steve Smith, who caught 48 passes for 529 yards and 3 TDs last year, signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“The Eagles really pushed hard,” Smith said. “I spoke to their front office a lot and they showed a great interest in me. And I think they’re on the right path to winning a championship, so it just worked out. I just chose the Eagles because it seemed like a great fit.”
Steve Smith, a free-agent Pro Bowl Wide Receiver visited the Giants on Monday and Tuesday to discuss the contract issues, and also to have his injured left knee examined.
On Wednesday, Giants’ Coach Tom Coughlin said Steve Smith’s visit went well, but added, “He’s got a ways to go,” implying that Smith might not be ready in time for the new season.
Smith is quoted as saying “I feel good.” After his knee surgery last year, he reported he’s been running and working out to strengthen the knee. “I haven’t had any setbacks. I think I’m pretty close.”
Eagles’ Coach Andy Reid said “He’s played very well against us in the past few years and we’re happy to have him on board.”
Giants’ cornerback, Terrell Thomas reported on Twitter: “Hate to see a SS sign w/any team, but glad we get to play against him 2x a yr, and show him the grass ain’t greener on the other side.”
