Each year the Kennedy Center honors those who have spent a lifetime making contributions to the cultural arts and this year President Obama was on hand to offer praise to those being honored.
The honorees for 2010 were as diverse as ever. The five recipients included country singer Merle Haggard, choreographer Bill T. Jones, Broadway composer Jerry Herman, former Beatle Paul McCartney and actress and talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.
Each of the award recipients was given the honor of a tribute from fellow stars including Julia Roberts and Chris Rock. President Obama was also present and offered a speech touting the importance of the arts as well as mentioning the special achievements of each of the honorees.
The event was held Saturday night and will be broadcast on December 28.
