Fans around the world are cheering because Michael Bay just can’t let it go.
That is, the Transformers movie series and its multimillion-dollar franchise he’s helped create. Bay announced after the highly anticipated third installment, “Dark of the Moon,” that it would be his last Transformers movie.
The director’s work soared with $2.7 billion worldwide at the box office, with the latest in the saga becoming the fifth-highest grossing film of all time.
If you Want Something Done Right…
Yet, it wasn’t the series’ success which made him change his mind. Bay recently announced his return to the set of at least one more Transformers movie. When asked why the change of mind on Collider.com, Bay is quoted as saying he had done a lot of soul-searching and realized he didn’t want someone to come in and “screw things up.” Instead, he felt he needed to reinvent the story and set the foundations for the franchise’s future.
“So I’m thinking that if I do this last one, we set it on a new footing, we change a lot of things.”
Bay explained his vision for the next movie along with a change of cast and potentially new robots. “We broaden it so it can be set up and be carried on — it would have a better chance for survival, I guess.” He stressed it won’t be a complete reboot of the series; instead the history of the first three parts will remain as a backdrop to continue the storyline. On Collider.com, Bay explained “No [it’s not a reboot]. We’re basically taking from the history of where it was, or where we left it in Chicago. And we’re going to carry it on from there.”
The Rumor Mill
Speculations about where the renowned action-film maker will take “Transformers 4″ are running wild. When he was asked on Hero Complex whether the next movie could involve a departure from Earth, the director said “I think so, yeah, a little. That feels like the way to go, doesn’t it? I want to go a little off but I don’t want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded. That’s what works in these movies; that’s what makes it accessible.”
Fans can expect Bay’s signature look of quick cuts, angles that amplify kinetic possibilities, a wicked sense of timing and a passion of all things sleek and fast, as mentioned on Dan of Geek. With a trimmed budget, $30 million less than the previous movie, it’ll come down to Bay’s creativity to narrate a great visual storyline and characters who make the core of the movie shine, it’s all about the robots.
Still, fans will have to be patient. particularly since “Transformers 4” is scheduled for release in June 2014.
