In a vote Wednesday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi D-California was chosen to be the House Minority Leader for the 112th Congress.
Pelosi defeated North Carolina Rep. Heath Shuler in a 150-43 vote in the House. There had been an earlier motion to postpone the Democratic leadership vote until December 8. It was defeated in a 68-129 vote.
Republicans won 61 seats in the elections this year and will control the House next year. Many people feel Pelosi was a big factor in the Democrats losing their seats. Some wanted time to determine what caused the massive shift in power over the election period and that is the reason for the motion to postpone the vote. In a unanimous vote the Republicans chose Ohio Rep. John Boehner to lead them in Congress.
