Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, opens in theaters tomorrow, with some having midnight showings, according to Disney. In this installment of the series, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) hooks up with Blackbeard (Ian McShane) in a search for the Fountain of Youth. The film is rated PG-13 for action/adventure violence.
Reviews have been critical. Rene Rodriguez of the Miami Herald, said “even the most forgiving moviegoer will recognize this movie as the blatant cash-grab that it is,” and adding that Johnny Depp takes a “lazy, uninspired turn as Capt. Jack Sparrow.”
Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, who played such prominent roles in previous Pirates of the Caribbean flicks, don’t show up in this one. Instead, we get the beautiful Penélope Cruz as Captain Jack Sparrow’s former flame, and Blackbeard’s daughter, Angelica.
Chris Knight, of the National Post, says of the film “Effects and swordplay serve to push the waterlogged plot forward. Fights break out every 20 minutes whether called for or not; voodoo and other dark magic is summoned whenever things get too quiet,” and that “What no one seemed to remember to pack was the fun and wit that enlivened the former films.”
Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel doesn’t hold back, “Repetitious, tedious and pretty much joyless.”
We’ll let you judge for yourself when Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, opens on Friday, in the meantime, here’s a clip:
