Addidas has announced that it has signed an agreement with The Pokémon Company of Japan to have 11 of Nintendo’s Pokémon represent Japan’s FIFA soccer team as official mascots.
The Japanese team, known as the Blue Samurai, will be represented by world famous Pikachu and ten other of his fellow Pokémon: Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Fennekin, Froakie, Chespin, Meowth, Litleo, Pancham and Helioptile.
Japan’s slogan for the 2014 FIFA World Cup is “20124 to power the dream” and to celebrate, Addidas is launching a new initiative.
This partnership is part of that initiative, known as Addidas’ “Engine Project”, which aims to have players in uniform act as part of an “engine” and promote unity and team spirit.
The pokémon are expected to make an appearance in Brazil this summer and can be seen in promotional material wearing the Blue Samurai jerseys.
Brazil will be playing host of the 2014 FIFA World Cup from June 12 to July 13, 2014.
Japan’s national soccer team first appeared in the FIFA World Cup in 1998 which was hosted by France.
