Presidents Day Sales: A Look At Some Real Deals (& Some That Aren’t)

Traditionally, furniture and mattresses are popular items for Presidents Day sales.

So let’s start with them, then expand to a few other products, and take a look at some real deals and some that are not all that unique to Presidents Day.

When it comes to mattresses, Sleep Number is heavily promoting a 50% off, plus a free comforter, on their Sleep Number iLE bed. These are not cheap beds – a queen size is advertised at $2,149.99 – and that’s at half off the regular price. Is it a real deal though?

Looking into this a bit further, the same bed was on sale for half off back on Feb 6, when Google last made a cache of Sleep Number’s home page. It was also advertised at half off on Black Friday. It may very well be good deal, we’ll leave that up to you to decide. But it appears that the price is ongoing special and not unique to Presidents Day. However, it does look like the free comforter giveaway with the purchase is.

Overstock.com is having a mattress (and furniture) sale with 10% off for Presidents Day. How about this one, is it an actual deal?

Using their offer of a Simmons BeautySleep Fox Hollow Plush Queen-size Mattress Set for $449, we looked up what they were selling the set for a week ago. $499. Right about 10% off.

Looking at Overstock.com’s furniture, we find the same thing. Selecting several furniture items at random, we find they are indeed approximately 10% lower that the prices offered last week.

Let’s head over to Sears. On their site, we see they are offering 30% off select appliances. Again, not saying that’s a bad deal, but it’s one we see all the time at Sears, so it’s nothing special. They are also having a 50% off sale on select mattresses, but at this time we are unable to confirm that the merchandise really is discounted from any other time of the year.

Walmart is promoting both mattresses and furniture on sale for Presidents Day. They do not provide a set percentage off – it looks like the items fall into a pretty tight range of discounts. But they are somewhat less than they were last week.

Best Buy is also offering discounts on items that were priced higher just a week ago. Included in the promotions are HDTV’s, PC, and gaming consoles.  They also are promoting 10% to 30% off appliances, which is something we see often at Best Buy. We don’t see Black Friday like specials here of course, but there are some discounts that are actually less than last week’s prices.

Overall, we find a real mixed bag of actual discounts in President’s Day sales this year. Some appear over-hyped, others are real – but generally not dramatic.
