Record Store Day 2013 | Special Releases By Bowie, Cave, McCartney & More

Record Store Day has fallen on the third Saturday of  April since 2007.

On April 20 this year, it will once again pay tribute to the more than 700 independently-owned record stores in the US, and to similarly non-corporate, brick-and-mortar operations worldwide.

This year special releases from some of the iconic names in rock music will offer up limited editions in vinyl and CD formats.

David Bowie fans will have access to a limited 1,000 copy run of the 7” vinyl single ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’ along with 1,000 copies of 4-track recordings of ‘Bowie 1965’, also on 7” vinyl. Additionally, 2,000 7” picture disc copies of ‘Drive-In Saturday’ will hit the shelves as a one-time offering.

Nick Cave and fellow cohorts, The Bad Seeds, will put out a 7” picture disc of their single ‘Animal X’.

Paul McCartney & Wings followers will be able to purchase a 12” version of the 1976 classic single ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’.

Other releases from established acts like Mumford & Sons, Blind Melon, David Matthews Band, and and even a posthumous issue from Jimi Hendrix, among many others, will also follow. The official list will be posted on March 21. All releases will be made available for purchase at independent record stores beginning April 20.

This year’s Record Store Day Ambassador is Jack White, from White Stripe’s fame. Regarding their choice of White, the official Record Store Day website wrote: “Owns a record store. CHECK. Heads a record label. CHECK. Makes all kinds of records. CHECK. We can think of no one better to fly the flag for Record Store Day 2013, can you?

Past Record Store Day Ambassadors have included Jesse Hughes, Joshua Homme, Ozzy Osbourne, and Iggy Pop.

The nostalgia expressed for the independent record store by the artists themselves is what has made Record Store Day an adored and much-anticipated event.

Henry Rollins expressed, “I think record stores play a huge part in discovering new music. When I was growing up I would spend hours going through all the bins looking for something new that seemed interesting to me and that could relate to what I was listening to at the time. This is why I want to support National Record Store Day.”
