Ricky Gervais Under Fire For Golden Globes Spectacle

As host of the Golden Globe awards on Sunday, comedian Ricky Gervais created quite a stir and left viewers wondering if he will be asked to return for a third time next year.

The gutsy antics began the moment he stepped on stage with what appeared to be a beer for the opening monologue. He began the night by digging right into an actor. “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking,” Gervais began. “Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.”  The jabs from Ricky Gervais did not end there with Sheen. He went on to throw punches at a variety of people and movies.

Over the course of the show Ricky Gervais managed to insult the movie The Tourist with a jab at their need to bribe someone to be nominated and even at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who is behind the Golden Globe awards. He insinuated an unnamed famous Scientologist was gay and told Hugh Hefner’s latest partner to “just not look at it”.

The comedian referred to Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s father and told the Sex and the City 2 stars that they were old enough to have been in Bonanza and the person who airbrushed their poster should have won for special effects.

When introducing Robert Downey Jr, Gervais began with a list of his many film credits. He soiled the list by finishing with, “but many of you in the room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and the Los Angeles County Jail.”

Downey showed little humor as he bowed and replied with his own comment. “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited, with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”

Downey was not the only one to strike back. Steve Carell of The Office pushed Gervais away when he attempted a handshake. Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Philip Berk announced that the next time Gervais wanted help qualifying a movie he could look elsewhere. Even Tom Hanks and Tim Allen joined in. Hanks opened with “We can recall back when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian.” And Allen finished up with, “neither of which he is now.”

Speculation is that Gervais has ended his own career as host of the Golden Globes. This was his second year with the awards show.
