Sabra Issues Nationwide Hummus Recall Due To Listeria : What To Do and Who To Contact

The Sabra Dipping Company has announced it is recalling about 30,000 cases of its classic hummus products after discovering several samples were contaminated with listeria.

According to published reports the listeria was discovered at Sabra’s Michigan plant during routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).

Officials then alerted inspectors in Virginia and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who are now working with Sabra to correct the problem.

At this time the recall is limited to select packages of classic hummus only, which have been shipped to supermarkets and other food chains nationwide; you can see the full list below.

It should also be noted that as of this writing the FDA has stated that there have been no reports of anyone becoming sick and the recall is voluntary.

Those who have any of the contaminated products in their possession- unopened- can return it for a full refund.

If you didn’t eat any of the  tainted products, but have them in your possession, the CDC advises that you thoroughly wash contaminated areas. If the product is opened, it should be sealed before throwing it away.

This listeria outbreak is the latest in a string of reported incidents in the food industry: just yesterday Blue Bell announced an expanded recall of its products due to listeria contamination.

According to the CDC, listeria can be potentially deadly to the very young, the elderly, those with a compromised immune system and pregnant women.

Several doctors we spoke with recommended that you should go immediately to the ER if you’ve eaten a tainted product and experience any of the following symptoms: stomach cramps, muscle cramps, diarrhea, fever and chills.

Symptoms can appear anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after eating a tainted product.

Anyone who is concerned can contact the FDA at  http://www.fda.gov.
