SAG Awards 2014: Nominations Announced!

Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” received four film nominations, more than any other film.

Nominations for the 20th Annual SAG Awards were announced Wednesday morning.

Steve McQueen’s exceptional 2013 slavery drama 12 Years a Slave received four total nominations, more than any other film.

The Weinstein Company led the studios with a total of seven SAG nominations.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler earned three nominations, as did August: Osage County and Dallas Buyers Club.

The Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category will see 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor competing against Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role nominees include Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County), and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks).

In the supporting categories, 12 Years a Slave’s Michael Fassbender will be up against Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Daniel Bruhl (Rush), and the late James Gandolfini (Enough Said).

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role nominees include Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), June Squibb (Nebraska), and Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler).

Facing off in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category (the SAG category equivalent to Best Picture) will be 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyer’s Club, and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

In television news, AMC’s Breaking Bad lead the show nominations with four, while HBO lead the network nominations with a total of 13.

Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Homeland, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones were nominated for best ensemble cast in a drama, while Arrested Development, Veep, Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and 30 Rock were nominated in the best ensemble comedy category.

Former Academy Award winner Rita Moreno will be honored with the 2014 SAG Life Achievement Award.

The SAG Awards will be simulcast live January 18, 2014 at 8PM EST (5PM PST) on the TBS and TNT television networks.
