Samsung’s Galaxy S II smartphone won big at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
In the show’s Global Mobile Awards for 2012, Samsung won honors as both the “Device Manufacturer Of The Year” and for having the “Best Smartphone” of the year, the Galaxy S II.
JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics, said of the awards:
“We are pleased to receive this honor from GSMA and believe that it’s a testament to Samsung’s innovation, quality products, and attention to consumer preferences. We sold over 97 million smartphones in 2011, demonstrating that this is the right approach.”
The Galaxy S II has done very well with shoppers. Over 20 million have been sold worldwide in 10 months, according to Samsung.
The Galaxy S II is an Android-based phone and was launched in the US last fall. It has a 1.2 GHz dual core processor, with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The phone features a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, an 8 megapixel rear facing camera, and a 2 megapixel front facing camera. The smartphone has received very positive reviews from critics.
With a new two-year contract , the smartphone currently sells for $99.99 at AT&T.com. On T-Mobile.com it’s $229.99 with contract. WireFly has it available on Sprint for $79.99, and on T-Mobile for $179.99. LetsTalk has it for $189.99 on T-Mobile.
