For the next five years, cable channel HBO, will be hosting long-time public television staple, “Sesame Street.”

During those five seasons, episode count will increase to 35 per season, almost double from the 18 episodes that is the norm. Also included within the deal is a spin-off show, focusing primarily on muppets, as well as a new educational series for children. After nine months, episodes already aired, will be released for free to PBS, where the show has exclusively called home for the last 45 years. The show will air on HBO in the fall, as well as its digital streaming outlets.

The deal relieves the financial burden that has plagued production company, Sesame Workshop (formerly the Children’s Television Workshop,) for many years. A not-for-profit company, the organization has relied heavily on donations from public television, and merchandising from toys, DVD’s, etc.; all of which, has had sales erode over the years.

Sesame Street was created with the intent of offering children in financially struggling homes quality education that children in preschools could expect to receive.
