Shark Lift-Away Vacuum Cleaners Recalled For Shock Hazard

Approximately 142,000 Shark brand Rotator Powered Lift-Away upright vacuum cleaners are being recalled for risk of electric shock in the U.S and Canada.

The potential for hazard occurs because the aluminum wand can remained energized with electricity even when disconnected from the vacuum cleaner’s handle, according to the company.

The four models of Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away upright vacuum cleaners being recalled have model numbers NV650W, NV651, NV652 and NV660.

Consumers can find the model number on the back of the unit, in the upper right-hand corner, printed on a silver sticker.

The affected vacuums are maroon or purple in color with a middle section made of clear plastic and Shark and Rotator printed on the front. The units are approximately 45 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

Some were sold in retail stores including Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, and Target while others were sold directly to consumers by Euro-Pro and online at sharkclean.com. Additional units were sold through television infomercials from August 2014 through March 2015. Prices ranged from $250 through $350.

The maroon models affected by the recall are NV650W, sold by Euro-Pro directly to consumers, and NV652, sold in stores.

Purple models that are part of the recall include NV651 and NV660, both sold in stores.

Additional information to help determine recalled units include a date code showing the week and year of manufacture, printed on a metal prong of the power plug, in a WWYY format.

The recalled vacuums have a date code that begins with 48 and ends with 14.

According to Euro-Pro, “Vacuum cleaners marked with a dimple or green circle sticker on the outside of the plastic cuff that holds the aluminum wand have been inspected by the firm and are not included in this recall.”

So far, no injuries have been reported, although the company has received 62 reports of the aluminum wand disconnecting from the vacuum cleaner’s handle.

Approximately 142,000 of the recalled units were sold in the U.S. and 650 were sold in Canada.

Consumers with recalled models of the Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away upright vacuum cleaners should stop using the units immediately and contact Euro-Pro for a free replacement wand.
