Skulls Of 22 Babies Fractured – Yet Bumbo Baby Seats Remain In Stores

22 babies have suffered skull fractures after falling out of Bumbo Baby Seats, according to the US Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC).

But despite a 2007 recall, the product is still sold in stores.

Amazon, Sears, Walmart, Babies ‘R’ Us, and other major retailers continue to carry the baby seats, which sell for approximately $30 to $70 each.

Bumpo-Baby-SeatThe 2007 recall only required that additional on-product warnings be placed on the baby seats, warning users to not use the baby seat on elevated surfaces. It did not require that stores stop selling the seats, which are made by Bumbo International Trust of South Africa.

At the time of the 2007 recall, the CPSC said they had received 28 reports of falls. Three babies suffered fractured skulls as a result of those falls.

“If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries,” the CPSC said back in 2007.

In a warning issued yesterday, the CPSC and the manufacturer stated they “…are urging parents and caregivers to never place Bumbo Baby Seats on tables, countertops, chairs or other raised surfaces.”

In the warning, the CPSC said there have been at least 95 more incidents of babies falling out of Bumbo Baby Seats, all occurring after the 2007 recall was issued.

Of those falls, 45 were while the baby seat was on an elevated surface. 17 of the falls resulted in the infants (ages 3 to 10 months) suffering skull fractures.

The remaining falls (50) involved babies falling out when the seats were placed on the floor or at an unknown elevation. Two of these children suffered skull fractures, and a third child suffered a concussion.

In all, that’s a total of 128 falls, 22 skull fractures, and 1 concussion, which have been – reported – to either the CPSC or the manufacturer.

Bumbo Baby Seats started being sold in the US in 2003 and approximately 3.85 million (and counting) have been sold so far.
