Skype – Opps, We Did It Again

A huge Skype outage was felt yesterday. Millions of people from around the world were unable to make calls or had to deal with drops while they were talking. This is the second disruption of worldwide proportions that took place this year.

The reason for the problems was a network connection failure. The highly popular low cost calling service also had problems in 2007, when for 2 days calls were disrupted.

This time the number of people affected was much higher.Charles S. Golvin, a research analyst for Forrester, declared that it is “almost unheard of” such a big communication system to go down. He also added that with regular phone line disruptions the affected area is small while the Skype outage hit people from all around the world.

According to Golvin this is not the first network outage that hit the Internet world. Social networks like Twitter and Facebook and even EBay had problems. Unfortunately the impact was not as big as with the messenger system.

Skype apologized for the problems and quickly reacted on Twitter and the official blog. They said that engineers are performing repairs and that everything will be back to normal soon.
