STAT! Syringe: Induce Vomiting In Dogs At Home Safely

The STAT! Syringe is a must-have in all doggie first aid kits. When your dog eats something he shouldn’t have, action must be taken quickly in order to save his life.

How Does It Work?

The STAT! Syringe is designed to make administering the proper amount of hydrogen peroxide 3% — which induces vomiting — quick and simple.

The syringe is calibrated to measure the proper dose of hydrogen peroxide 3% to dogs weighing between 5lbs and 60lbs. The STAT! Syringe can be used for dogs of all weights, but additional doses will have to be drawn for dogs weighing over 60lbs.

Once the proper dose of hydrogen peroxide 3% has been drawn into the STAT! Syringe, place the tip of syringe into the dog’s mouth, angle it towards the cheek, and press the plunger until it is empty.

Make sure your dog swallows — as a vet tech, I know some dogs can be stinkers about this. If your dog won’t swallow, gently hold his muzzle shut and stroke his throat until you feel him swallow.

If your dog doesn’t vomit within 15 minutes, you may administer the same dosage again. If he still doesn’t vomit with 10 minutes of the second dose, it’s time to take him and the packaging of whatever he consumed to the vet or veterinary ER. They will have access to stronger vomit-inducing products.

If your dog does vomit within the given timeframe, you still need to make an appointment to see your veterinarian to make sure your dog is okay. Your vet may need to give activated charcoal to your dog to ensure no leftover traces of the toxin consumed are absorbed.

Also, as unappealing as it sounds, bring some of your dog’s vomit to your veterinarian so he or she can inspect it.

Precautions

The STAT! Syringe is to be used in dogs only. It is not approved for cats or humans.

Always call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center — (888) 426-4435 before using the STAT! Syringe. In some cases, inducing vomiting will cause more harm than good.

Hydrogen peroxide 3% is the only type of hydrogen peroxide to be used.
