Mr. Mercedes, Stephen King’s newest novel, seems like yet another super-charged thriller.

The action starts outside a job fair where eight people get killed and fifteen others get mangled in a hit-and-run.

The killer disappears.

Police officer Bill Hodges works the case until his retirement, but it remains unsolved and continues to haunt him.

Then suddenly, Bill gets a letter from a man claiming credit for the incident. The letter threatens more unimaginable violence.

Pulled out of retirement by the threats of the gruesome letter, Bill begins to hunt down the man responsible. In his quest, he is joined by an unlikely pair of fellow heroes; a 17-year-old and one victim’s sister. Together, they play game of suspense with the killer, and they must win before time is up and thousands more are hurt or killed.

King truly masters suspense once again in Mr. Mercedes, but there is a twist. This new novel has no supernatural element driving the action. It is simply the good and evil sides of human nature battling in a war over destiny.

Mr. Mercedes is rated 4 out of 5 stars at Barnes & Noble and Goodreads, and 4.5 out of 5 on Amazon.
