Tax-free weekend 2015 is coming for residents of twelve states starting tomorrow, Friday, August 7, 2015.
We checked with some popular national retailers to see which stores are extending shopping hours to accommodate the back-to-school, tax-free rush this weekend.
Most stores said they were not extending store hours this year although shoppers can still expect to find great deals on back-to-school supplies and clothing as well as electronics for Tax-Free Weekend 2015.
Best Buy will be open during normal operating hours for tax-free weekend.
A company representative for Best Buy said, “Best Buy stores will be open their regular hours for tax-free weekends, and you can find our back-to-school deals in our insert, which is posted at bestbuy.com. Consumer electronics are always popular items for back-to-school shopping, and we know customers appreciate not having to pay sales tax on these items this coming weekend.”
Office Depot and Office Max stores will be operating under normal store hours for back-to-school tax-free weekends.
“Office Depot and OfficeMax retail stores are open regular hours during the tax-free weekends and are fully stocked and ready to go. We look forward to the opportunity to pass along the savings on to our customers, whether they are shopping for back to school or their business,” said Julianne Embry, Senior Manager of Public Relations.
A Staples spokesperson confirmed that Staples stores will not be extending shopping hours for tax-free weekends. To find local Staples store hours, visit Staples.com/storelocator.
Kohl’s has confirmed its stores will be open during regular hours for tax-free weekend. A check of a few local Kohl’s stores showed they’ll be open until 11pm Friday and Saturday and until 9 pm on Sunday. Those same stores open at 8 am on Saturday and 9 am on Sunday.
A company representative said, “Kohl’s knows staying within budget is important to back-to-school shoppers. At Kohl’s, families will find incredible savings on everything they need to get ready for a new school year, including national and exclusive brands at prices they can appreciate. Great brands, incredible savings opportunities and an easy experience all make Kohl’s a great choice for back-to-school. Shoppers can redeem Kohl’s Cash through August 16 in store, online or at the Kohl’s Kiosk.”

A representative for Sears confirmed, “Sears is not having extended store hours for the tax-free weekend. However, customers can confirm their local store’s hours at sears.com/stores.”
“Sears is participating with great deals and convenient shopping solutions for the tax free weekend. Customers can save on items under $75 with looks from favorite brands including Bongo, Canyon River Blues, Roebuck & Co., and Amplify as well as on activewear, uniforms and backpacks.”
JC Penney’s company spokesperson said, “JC Penney will have extended store hours for the tax holiday weekend, opening early and closing late. The exact times vary by state.”
Shoppers can find local JC Penney store hours online at stores.jcpenney.com, although it appears the site doesn’t reflect holiday hours. Most JC Penney stores seem to be open until 10pm Friday and Saturday and through 9pm on Sunday for tax-free weekend in participating states.
Old Navy stores will be open with extended hours for tax-free weekend 2015. A check of local stores varied by location with most opening an hour or two earlier on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and some staying open an hour later on Saturday. A Target representative couldn’t confirm extended store hours for tax-free weekend and said, “Store hours vary across the country. We encourage guests to check with their local store for hours.”
Walmart will be open 24/7 at a majority of its locations. To beat the back-to-school rush at Walmart, shoppers can buy online and pick up their purchases in store or have orders of $35 or more shipped home for free.
Of the twelve states holding tax-free weekends for 2015 that start tomorrow August 7, most are for the duration of the weekend running from Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9. Those states are: Alabama, New Mexico, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia.
Other states participating in tax-free weekends that start on Friday, August 7 and end on a day other than Sunday include Florida, August 7-16, as well as Iowa and Louisiana, August 7-8.
