Matt Hughes, a popular storm chaser on The Discovery Channel’s hit show Storm Chasers, died after a suicide attempt, according to TMZ.
The Discovery Channel announced his death during last week’s episode. At that time they did not give a cause of death, but they did indicate that it was not related to the show.
According to TMC Hughes attempted suicide on May 14 at his home in Kansas. He was alive and breathing when police responded. However, he died 12 days later, on May 26, due to the injuries he received when he attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself. He was 30 years old.
The announcement of Matt Hughes death came as a shock to viewers. A former friend and colleague Aaron Blaser, said that his friend suffered from depression.
Storm Chasers is a reality show chronicling a group of meteorologist and filmmakers as they hunt down, study, and film tornadoes.
Matt Hughes is survived by his wife, Kendra, and two young sons, Hunter and Collin.
