Banana Boat UltraMist continuous spray sunscreens are being recalled due to the danger of serious burns – as in from actual fire, not the sun.
A full list of the Banana Boat products subject to the recall is below. But we have to ask – if the alcohol in Banana Boat sunscreens is causing people’s skin to catch on fire, what about all these other spray-on sunscreens that are on the market?
According to Energizer Holdings, the company that makes the Banana Boat products, the issue is related to the nozzle used on the Banana Boat sprays.
“The spray valve opening on the affected products dispenses more than is typical in the industry for continuous sun care sprays,” the company said in a statement. “As a result, the product is taking longer to dry on the skin than is typical with other continuous sprays.”
They go on to explain that if a user’s product-damp skin comes in contact with an ignition point… a flame or spark of some kind, the sunscreen can catch on fire, burning the user. The company said they have received four reports of this happening to US consumers.
So the recalled Banana Boat sunscreens deliver a thicker spray that is “typical in the industry.” That’s not quite the same as saying it’s “unique” in the industry. We may hear from other sunscreen manufactures before this thing is over.
The sunscreen sprays currently being recalled were sold from January of 2010 through September 30, 2012.
The company said in their statement that consumers are advised not to use the recalled sunscreens. However, they stopped short of asking shoppers to return the product for a refund/exchange, which is generally standard procedure in such recalls. They also did not provide disposal instructions.
The company did say they are working on a fix and expects “to offer new Banana Boat continuous spray products shortly.”
