It’s Night 1 of the live playoffs on NBC’s Season 7 of The Voice as the top 20 artists begin to perform in front of coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, and Pharrell Williams.
While tonight both Team Adam and Team Blake take the stage, tomorrow night Team Gwen and Team Pharrell will perform. Once the performances are complete, only 3 artists from each team will move on to the next round. America will have the power to vote and ultimately choose 2 artists, while the coaches will save 1.
Which contestants impressed tonight? Let’s recap some of our favorite performances of the night.
Team Adam’s Chris Jamison performs “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran
Despite facing some breath control issues, Chris did an impeccable job of commanding the stage and gave a solid vocal performance of Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t.” Although the song did not give him the chance to have a mind blowing WOW moment, he still did a good job of delivering every lyric to the quick tempo of the song.
Blake says, “That’s a tough song to navigate. There’s a lot of words in there. Great job!”
Pharrell says, “I agree, great job. I saw a moment where the breathing was an issue, but that’s Ed’s incredible penmanship, he writes to every syllable. When you took the next octave up, you floored the audience.”
Gwen says, “Scatting all those words with all those long notes is not easy to do and I noticed something I have not noticed with you before. You really are amazing on stage in the way you perform and use your body.”
Adam Levine says, “You were excited up there. It’s hard to contain yourself because you have so much energy coming out for a song like this, but you were super controlled and balanced and had a nice arc to it. You have that intangible quality that either someone does or doesn’t have and you have it big time”
Team Blake’s Jessie Pitts performs “Holding Out For A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler
Nashville Indie artist Jessie Pitts definitely has one of the most unique voices in the competition this season. She did an excellent job of showcasing the purely sweet and tender quality to her voice.
Pharrell says, “The way you just find the pocket and the sweetest of the spots and stay there the whole time is incredible. I loved that performance.”
Gwen says, “You’re so good and so natural and original. Every performance gets better and better.”
Adam says, “This is the moment to do something memorable and this is by far your best performance so far.”
Blake says, “You are completely original and picked the right moment to have your best performance yet.”
Team Adam’s Taylor Phelan performs “Cool Kids”
While it is apparent that some of the contestants are still trying to find who they are as an artist, Taylor is one of the exceptions. He clearly exudes the confidence and talent of an Indie singer-songwriter rock artist. His interpretation of “Cool Kids” was effortless. There is no doubt Taylor is simply a pro at his craft.
Pharrell says, “I’m so proud of you. Congrats! This exactly where I thought you would be. You showed why people should buy your album when it comes out.”
Gwen says, “One thing I would say, a lot of people are making huge improvements on the show, but with you it is just like watching a peer up there.”
Adam says, “You blew us all away from the very beginning. You amaze me!”
Mia Pfirrman performs “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray
Mia did a stellar job of emphasizing the haunting vibe of Lana Del Ray’s “Young and Beautiful.” She gave a beautiful vocal performance and did such an amazing job of pulling away from her usual vocal acrobatics and just simply showcased the lovely tone to her voice. The perfectly executed octave change was a captivating embellishment to her performance.
Blake says, “What a great performance! Your voice is perfect for that type of performance.”
Pharrell congratulates Mia on her immense growth thus far.
Adam says, “I always expect you to be great. You have been so receptive of what I’ve been telling you. I am so amazed by what you did up here. I know it was super hard for you to hold back, but I am glad you did. You finally came into your own in a potent and surprisingly good way.”
Team Adam’s Damien performs “I’m Not The Only One” by Sam Smith
Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One” was the perfect song choice for Damien. He sang the song with so much heart and passion just like he always does in every single one of his performances. He did a fantastic job of adding his own flavor to the song as he revealed his extraordinarily strong full and falsetto voice. His pitch perfect performance was brilliantly delivered with so much power and control.
Blake says, “I love how you have the ability to combine a soft smooth voice with power and range. Great song choice! Congrats that was awesome!”
Pharrell says, “Let me says two things. One, the way you move from your chest voice to your head voice is like an elevator. It is amazing. Two, all of Louisiana and TSA is going crazy right now.”
Gwen says, “You have some truth in you that is speaking to everyone. The audience has been the loudest they have been all night. You are amazing and I am so blessed to sit here and watch that.”
Adam says, “You really capped it off with that performance. This whole room, the whole country felt that.”
