“The Walking Dead” Season 4 Episode 16, Finale: Terminus and Death Predictions

“TWD” newcomer, Mary of Terminus

“The Walking Dead” has a lot of loose ends to tie up before its big season four finale. Now that Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) have been reunited and they along with Sasha (Sonequa Martin), Bob (Lawrence Gilliard), Tara (Alanna Masterson), Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Eugene (Josh McDermitt), and Rosita (Christian Serratos) finally reached Terminus, the question of Terminus’s sanctuary looms.

Terminus appeared an organized, fruitful camp. As the group entered the unlocked gates, the camera cut to flowers and a vegetable garden. In the background we heard chattering voices and in the distance we saw Mary (Denise Crosby) standing over a grill.

Mary was quick to greet the new comers and offer them nourishment. It all seemed a bit too easy. If Woodberry taught viewers anything, it was approach new groups with caution.

“The Walking Dead” comic creator and series writer, Robert Kirkman, gave playful hints. During his thewalkingdead.com  post- mortum interview, he indicated dark times ahead.  He and the interviewer shared a good laugh after Kirkman quipped  peace and solace are possibilities in Terminus.

Levity is needed since Kirkman summed up the finale as, “savage” during his Reddit AMA. He also warned of a jaw dropping cliff hanger, so get ready for a painful seven month “TWD” hiatus.

While there is cause for suspicion, statements about savagery may not relate to Terminus’s nature. In December, Wetpaint.com  reported,  “a major character will die in the second half” of “The Walking Dead.” This will be a brutal affair.

Viewers have hardly recovered from Hershel’s (Scott Wilson) death, but they better brace themselves for more heart ache. All of the main characters have grown in the second half of season 4, so no matter who dies, viewers will grieve.

The three most likely candidates for death are Daryl (Norman Reedus), Maggie, and Glenn.

Daryl  is traveling with Joe (Jeff Kober), who, unbeknownst to Daryl, is hunting Rick (Andrew Lincoln) to exact vengeance. Rick strangled one of Joe’s men to protect Carl and Michonne. That man became a walker that attacked the rest Joe’s group. Joe’s code calls for retaliation.

Kirkman said long ago that he will eventually kill off Rick, but season 4 seems too soon. That doesn’t mean that Joe won’t do serious damage.

Daryl may die protecting Rick from Joe’s wrath.Daryl will likely find himself caught in the crossfire between his new travel companions and his leader, Rick. Kirkman stated during his Reddit AMA that no character was safe, “[so] suck it Reedus.” Daryl’s death would certainly cause an uproar.

Maggie or Glenn are two other interesting possibilities. What would be more heart wrenching than the death of Maggie or Glenn after they fought so hard to reunite? Their triumphant reunion was romantic, but it lulled viewers into a false sense of security.

Once husband and wife were together, Maggie makes a bold statement. Glenn carried a Polaroid that pictured Maggie sleeping. She burned the picture  and vowed the two would never again part. On the surface, this is a symbol of hope and strength, but there are more morbid interpretations.

Fire played a visible role in ‘Still’ when Daryl symbolically burned down a cabin that represented his past. The Maggie in the picture is no more. Surviving apart from Glenn transformed her. She would move even further from her former self if (God forbid) Glenn died.

The burned picture could also foreshadow Maggie’s death. Her death would take her out of the picture and push Glenn’s character to grow in exciting directions. This would be a twist on Glenn’s death in the comics. In the comics, Maggie emerges a strong leader shortly after Glenn is murdered; maybe the show will extend Glenn’s life and explore his character in new ways.

“The Walking Dead” season 4 finale airs Sunday March 30th at 9:00 PM on AMC. Which character would you miss the most? You can share your dread in the comment section.
