“Toejam and Earl,” the 1991 Sega Genesis cult classic, is attempting to return to video game consoles, thanks to a new Kickstarter campaign.
Humanature Studios, responsible for the campaign, is looking for financial backers to offer fans of the franchise a new adventure of the “funky” aliens. The link to the campaign can be found here.
The story of the original involved the alien duo crash landing on earth, searching the stages for parts to their ship. The newest sequel, continues this story, mirroring the events of the first. Gameplay will also be similar in style, but with 3D environments and 2D sprites.
As of this writing, the campaign has exceeded $100,000 of its 4k goal. 29 days remain.
The franchise has developed three games: the original in 1991, “Toejam and Earl in Panic on Funkatron,” in 1993, both on the Sega Genesis, and “Toejam and Earl III: Mission to Earth” in 2002 on the Xbox. The latter was poorly received due to poor controls and playing to ethnic stereotypes.
