Tonight: The Mentalist S6 Premiere – Is Jane… Red John?

Season 6 of The Mentalist is set to premiere tonight!

The story of carnie-con-man turned California Bureau of Investigation consultant Patrick Jane is reaching a critical point. This season’s subtitle is “Red John: The Final Chapter”.

Red John is Jane’s ongoing nemesis. Since the very first episode of season 1, Jane has been hunting the serial killer, whose many victims include Jane’s wife and daughter.

At the end of last season, you may recall that Red John, whose real identity we don’t know, knew several things that only Jane himself could know. Like a happy childhood memory that Jane had never shared with anyone…. and the list of names of men that Jane suspects of being Red John.

That made many fans question if Jane actually was Red John. Perhaps there’s some kind of split personality type of thing going on?

And don’t you think Jane’s boss and confidante, Teresa Lisbon, must be wondering the same thing? She doesn’t act like it… but she’s a smart lady. She can put two and two together.

In an interview with The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, Entertainment Weekly asked point blank if Jane was Red John. Heller answered: “I would say that definitively: Jane is not Red John.”

But if we are talking about a split personality – wouldn’t that be technically correct even if he is the same person physically? Hmmmm…

In that same interview though, Heller says “we can trust that list.”

Whose on the list?

Bret Stiles, Gale Bertram, Ray Haffner, Reede Smith, Bob Kirkland, Sheriff Thomas McAllister and Brett Partridge.

So the plot thickens…. but we’ll know a lot more soon. We’re being told the identity of Red John will be revealed by the end of 2013.

Trying to catch up with past The Mentalist episodes?

That’s a bit tricky. The Mentalist isn’t on Netflix or Hulu. CBS.com does show the previous week’s episode on their site – but not usually anything past the previous week. The fact that they show the last episode, at least, certainly comes in handy when a football game makes The Mentalist run late and the DVR misses it.

Seasons 1 through 5 are available on DVD, Amazon Instant Video and iTunes.

What do you think of the hunt for Red John?  And will the series continue after Red John is caught?

[toggle title=”Major Spoiler” state=”close” ]Our question was – probably – answered in tonight’s episode of The Mentalist when we see Red John painting an unconscious (dead? doubtful.) Lisbon’s face with blood as he talks to Jane on the phone. What do I mean by “probably”? Well, Red John does have disciples that often do his dirty work…[/toggle]
