The L.A. Times reports that Tony Bennett, who worked with Amy Winehouse to record a duet of the classic “Body and Soul” for his “Duets II” album, will do a tribute to the late superstar at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
Mr. Bennett appears in his first performance on the VMA stage since 1993 to honor the late singer. Mr. Bennett is scheduled to do the introduction, including footage from the two singers’ duo recording session. “Body and Soul” is described as Winehouse’s final studio session, which took place back in March at Abbey Road Studios inLondon.
Columbia Records is reported to be planning to release the single and video on September 14, 2011. The release date would have been Amy Winehouse’s 28th birthday.
The L.A. Times announced also that the “proceeds of the single will support the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which the singer’s family recently established to help a number of charities connected with children and young people.”
Mr. Bennett was described as very moved by the news of Amy’s death. “I was trying to tell her, ‘You have so much talent. Slow down on the drugs or it’s going to kill you,’ ” he said. “And then when I heard she died, I couldn’t stop crying. She was such a talent, so sweet.”
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards is schedule to air live from the Nokia Theatre L.A on Sunday, August 28 at 9 p.m. Performances by top stars such as Lady Gaga, Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Young the Giant and Jessie J. are included in the evening’s programming.
