As of today, the U.S. Department of State is reducing it’s diplomatic presence in Egypt and warning travelers to avoid travel to the country.
Due to violent demonstrations and social unrest, the State Department has authorized the voluntary departure of dependents and non-emergency employees. They are asking U.S. citizens to consider leaving Egypt when they can do so safely, and have also requested that U.S citizens obey curfew orders and to stay indoors during curfew hours.
The curfew issued by the Egyptian government covers Cairo, Alexandria and Suez and is from 4pm to 8am “until further notice.”
At the time of this story, the Cairo airport is open and operating. However, Delta Airlines has suspended flights to Egypt. Egypt Air has reportedly canceled outgoing flights, and their site, egyptair.com is down and unavailable.
The State Department has warned not only of flight disruptions, but also that transportation to and from the airport may be disrupted. They are advising travelers to heading to the airport to plan to arrive well before the 4pm curfew.
According to the State Department, U.S. citizens who are in Egypt and need assistance, and those who are concerned that a U.S citizen in Egypt needs help, should contact the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo at EgyptEmergencyUSC@state.gov, or at 1-202-501-4444.
