Ukraine Bus/Train Collide, 42 Dead

A collision between a commuter bus and a railway locomotive in the Dniproptrovsk region of the Ukraine has left 42 people dead and 9 injured.

The preliminary investigation shows that the bus was carrying 51 people as it approached an unguarded train crossing and proceeded to continue through.  Officials have said that the crossing was closed to vehicles and that the warning lights were all on. The driver, however, allegedly ignored those lights and disregarded the safety rules by driving through the stop as a train was approaching.

Of the 51 people on board the bus, 42 have died and 9 have been injured in the accident. The driver of the train did survive. It is not known if he suffered any injuries as a result of the accident.

The President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, has expressed his condolences for the victims’ families and has also declared Wednesday a national day of mourning for the lives lost in the accident.

The government will pay out 100,000 Ukranian hyrvnas ( $12,600 US Dollars) to each of the victims’ families.
