US Open Golf 2011: Donald, Westwood Favorites For Title

The 111th season of the US Open golf tournament begins June 16, and if the organisers are to be believed, it will be a full house on each of the four days of the competition. Despite the absence of Tiger Woods, who misses out due to an injury, tickets have been sold out for all four days and that is a good indicator of how the event is being perceived.

From amongst the other competitors, Graeme McDowell will go into the championship as the defending champion. However, according to the bookmakers around the world, he will not be the favourite to defend his title – something that only six others have done in the 110 year-old history of the competition.

Instead, it will be the top two ranked Luke Donald and Lee Westwood who will go into the US Open as favorites to win it. Martin Kaymer, the world number three is another of those who will be the player to watch out for.

Interestingly, the competition from the European golfers will be much stronger this year. McDowell has already said that European golf is quite strong at the moment and he felt good to be part of it. It remains to be seen whether there will be a 23rd European winner this year.
