Warner Bros.’ Unveil Upcoming slate of DC Films

Warner Bros.’ CEO Kevin Tsujihara revealed the complete DC comic movie slate today, while speaking at Time Warner Investor Day.

Several months ago DC and Warner Bros.’ announced plans to release a slate of films beginning in 2016 and rounding out till 2020. Though at the time the only confirmed films were, the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and highly anticipated Justice League film.

Today’s announcement expands on this greatly and beginning with Batman V Superman in 2016, DC and Warner Bros.’ are aiming to release two films a year, with the recently announced Suicide Squad (to be directed by Fury’s, David Ayer) being the second release of 2016. Reports have come out in the past week detailing the possible characters that will be featured as the squad, they are Blockbuster, Multiplex, Vixen, Captain Boomerang, Mindboggler, Jaculi and Deadshot.

With the announcement of a solo Wonder Woman film coming in 2017, DC are looking to be the first to do justice to a female superhero character on screen. 2017 will also see Justice League Part 1, which may have found it’s villain in fan-favorite Brainiac.

On top of confirming which films are actively in-development, the announcement also confirms the-ever-persistent rumor that Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) will indeed be playing Aquaman, in the upcoming Justice League Parts 1 & 2 as well as a rumored cameo in Batman V Superman, and finally in a solo Aquaman film, coming 2018.

Headlines were also made when it was confirmed (to the dismay of many fans) that the Television and Cinematic universes are indeed separate, and that Grant Gustin will not be reprising his role as the Flash, on the big screen. Instead Ezra Miller (Perks of being a wallflower, We need to talk about Kevin), will play the fastest man alive. Set to appear alongside Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in Justice League, before returning in his own solo film in 2018.

The recently announced Shazam feature starring the Rock has been set for 2019 alongside Justice League Part 2, to be again directed by Zack Snyder. Although it was announced that there would be separate and solo Batman and Superman films in the near future, they don’t appear to be apart of the current DC slate.

Rounding out the slate in 2020, Ray Fischer will star in a solo Cyborg film (becoming the fist superhero of color to receive his own film), which will be followed later that year by a reboot of the Green Lantern series.

With the recent spate of comic based T.v series, and announcements from both Marvel and DC regarding upcoming films, the future of the genre seems secure for years to come.
