Water for Elephants, the novel written by Sarah Gruen and released originally in 2006, has climbed to the top of the NY Times Bestseller list again.
The paperback version of the book first reach the top of the list in July of 2007. The hardcover never reached above number 7 during its 12 week run on the NY Times Bestseller list in 2006. With an upcoming movie based on the novel, it has regained popularity and now sits at number one for combined print and e-book fiction, paperback trade fiction, paperback mass market fiction and e-book fiction.
The novel tells the story of a young man whose parents died and left him with nothing. He proceeds to leave college and run away to join the circus. The reader is taken into the behind-the-scenes world of circus life and introduced to the people who make it possible as well as the animals. The young man is placed in charge of caring for the animals and falls in love with another member of the circus.
Reviews show that the book is quite popular among its readers as having the right blend of romance, drama and intrigue. Publishers Weekly noted that Gruen was able to humanize the characters that make up a circus so that readers could connect with them.
The movie that is due out in April of 2011 will star Reece Witherspoon and Rob Pattinson. It has created a surge on purchasing the book. It is available on Amazon starting at $10.95 for used copies and $15.00 for new.
