Where The Ordinary Meets The Extraordinary: In Trailer for “Joy”

“I believe the ordinary meets the extraordinary every single day,” says Bradley Cooper’s character in the upcoming drama Joy, featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano and Robert DeNiro as her father Rudy Mangano.

Bradley’s character is listed by Wikipedia as “an executive at the Home Shopping Network who helps Joy by giving the Miracle Mop a great boost.” That isn’t much for a character name, but it may have to do. For now, we’ll just say, “the Bradley Cooper character.” That’s not exactly pithy, but it’s the best we got.

However, any Jennifer Lawrence – David O. Russell collaboration is a predetermined must-see, at least for those of us in the trade.

The script for Joy was written by Russell, who also co-produced and directed the film, which is due out Dec. 25.

Russell has a long and quirky resume, which includes directing Spanking The Monkey (1994) and Flirting with Disaster (1996). He also directed Three Kings (1999) and I Heart Huckabees (2004). With Lawrence, however, he has reached new commercial heights, notching critical success with American Hustle (2013), which received 10 nominations at the 86th Academy Awards, and Silver Linings Playbook (2012), which was nominated for five awards, including best actress, the award for which was won by Lawrence.
